An Evening of Conversation:
Frédéric Bastiat's The Law
On Wednesday October 25, 2017, we co-hosted an event in Carmel, Indiana with the Indianapolis chapters of The Bastiat Society and Americans for Prosperity to learn about and discuss Frédéric Bastiat's The Law.
After the opening dinner, Dr. David Hart gave a biographical talk on Bastiat, the historical context of his writings, and the influence his works have had on the world.
Hart is the Director of the Online Library of Liberty Project at Liberty Fund and Academic Editor for Liberty Fund's translation project of the 6 Vol. Collected Works of Frédéric Bastiat.
After the talk, participants gathered in small groups to for facilitated conversations on The Law and its relevance today. The groups discussed the purpose of law a, how it becomes corrupted, and the far flung effects of what Bastiat calls "legal plunder."
At the end of the event, many participants purchased copies of Liberty Fund's new translation of Bastiat's collected works at a discounted price.
Dr. Hart's lecture outline and notes can be found on his personal website, along with a variety of other fascinating resources such as a reader's guide to Bastiat. A chronology of Bastiat's life and work can be found on the Online Library of Liberty website here.
