TRADE AND THE LABOR MARKET
CO-HOSTED BY AMERICA'S FUTURE FOUNDATION
FRIDAY JANUARY 24, 2018
GRAND RAPIDS, MI

Overview

On Friday January 24, 2018, the Center co-hosted an exclusive dinner discussion with the America's Future Foundation chapter in Grand Rapids, Michigan. The event brought together 14 individuals for a conversation about trade facilitated by Dr. Michael Clark, Associate Professor of Economics at Hillsdale College.

The group was assigned three short articles to read before the event: one by Dr. Clark, a CNN article on NAFTA and Michigan employment, and a ForeginPolicy.com article on why we trade.

The group used these readings as a springboard for a discussion on how technological innovation and globalization have catalyzed unprecedented changes in our economy. They explored how the American economy is struggling to adapt, with the old pathways to success becoming less applicable every day. The dialogue challenged people to think about short-term pain versus long-term gain and how to balance national and global interests.
